From 21 to 23 January 2020 a delegation of 20 experts from different Drugs Forensic Laboratories of Ukraine (Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Internal Affairs, Security Service, State Service on control of Drugs and Medicines, Ministry of Health and Customs, jointly with representatives of National Polices and Prosecutor General's Office) carried out a study visit organized by the Director of the Institute of Forensic Research of the Ministry of Justice of Poland.
During the visit, Ukrainian experts visited not only the mentioned Institute but also the Faculty of Chemistry of Jagiellonian University. In the University, they also visited the laboratories of the Department of Analytical Chemistry, including the Forensic Chemistry Unit, and they focused on cooperation between academia and forensic laboratories, which is very close in the case of Krakow.
The experts completed the activity by visiting the Department of Forensic Medicine and the Museum of Forensic Medicine.
The last day was devoted to a visit to Regional Police Forensic Laboratory in Krakow. It was a very didactical discussion with the experts of the chemical department on drug analysis.
The main conclusion of the visit is the need to enhance cooperation among different forensic institutions when working in the same field. It's not possible and inefficient that all forensic institutions acquire and train experts in all the areas of forensic expertise. Fluent cooperation among institutions is more efficient and allows the different Forensic Labs of Krakow to provide high standards in the analysis of the forensic experts.
During the visit Director of Kyiv Scientific Research Institute of Forensic Expertise (Ukraine) and the Director of the Institute of Forensic Research of the Ministry of Justice (Poland), establish the basis to sign an MoU among both institutions. This is also an important steep to strengthen cooperation among EU and Ukrainian institutions.
