Support to UNODC-WCO Condensed Theoretical-Practical Container Control Program Training

Regional UNODC held an ad hoc training event from 18th to 26th of July in Batumi, Georgia.

This training event is organised for new members of their Container Control Program units of Georgia and Ukraine. The event will be held, from 18th to 26th of July, in Batumi, Georgia, and UNODC has invited EU-ACT Project to participate and to provide funding for the cost of the Georgian attendees.

The units created/supported through the WCO/UNODC program are strategically placed to tackle the heroin transit trade. In Georgia (Poti and Tbilisi), they are staffed jointly by police and Customs and work towards common targets.  The overall remit is broader than just drugs trafficking, but their role is pivotal in tackling the Afghan heroin routed through the region.

Objectives
  • Support for, and participation in, the proposed training course would begin the process of establishing a better stake in the management and direction of CCP activity in both Georgia and Ukraine.  This assertion of involvement would enable the EU-ACT Project to promote mentoring and other capacity-building, as well as the early identification of, and support for, operational opportunities.
  • The specific objective would be to sponsor the attendance cost of up to 10 Georgian participants, and to take part in the delivery of the course itself.  This would legitimise follow-up engagement (by the regional Coordinators) to develop the Units’ activity against regional heroin trafficking targets.
  • An opportunity to shape and influence what should be a key law-enforcement tool.  Good visibility for the EU-ACT Project.
